HMRC has announced that it will use new AI to help it spot and correct errors, as well as uncovering more deliberate frauds.

They have signed a £175 million, 10 year deal with Quantexa to use their AI system that should help it assist with tax payer queries faster, as well as identifying fraudulent activities.

Complaints about HMRC service, particularly about poor response times, have been increasing year on year for quite some time, and it hoped the new AI system will be able to handle some queries quicker, although HMRC has emphasised that any decisions made by AI will also be checked by people. The new system should “support human decision-making, not replace it”.

The system should also help in tracking down payments made under the wrong payment references that have been allocated to the wrong account
