The Government has launched what it calls “the most comprehensive government-built chat tool in the world”, which uses AI to draw from over 80, 000 pages of information published on the Gov.uk website.

However, thorough testing has shown it to only be 90% accurate, with 1 in 10 answers not completely reflecting the official guidance in every detail. The Government emphasize that it offers guidance, not advice, so the results of the AI search should not be relied upon in isolation.

For example, when asked if a £1,000 increase in income from £99,000 would effect eligibility for child benefits, the AI responded that it would not as there is no upper limit for the benefits. This is technically correct, but it does not take account of the fact you have to start repaying them once you go over £100k of income.

We are not advising you not to use AI, but for anything complicated that could have major consequences on your taxes and financial affairs it is probably better to speak to an expert who can tailor the advice for your specific circumstances.
